Ivan Dodig and Edouard Roger-Vasselin, the No. 13 seeds, needed 73 minutes to beat Australian Open wild cards Nick Kyrgios and Matt Reid 6-2, 7-6(2) for a place in the second round. The Croatian-French team broke twice in the first set and won five straight points from 0/1 in the second set tie-break.
They will now play Kevin Krawietz and Nikola Mektic, who saved two match points to beat Nicholas Monroe and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan 4-6, 7-6(10), 7-5. The duo saved match points in the second set at 5-6, 30/40 and at 6/7 in the tie-break.
Six-time former champions Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan got their campaigns off to a strong start by beating Australians Alex Bolt and Marc Polmans 7-6(4), 7-6(1) in one hour and 40 minutes. The fourth-seeded Bryans could not convert two match points at 6-5 in the second set, but they were near-perfect in the tie-break for their 75th win at Melbourne Park (75-13 overall). They will now prepare to face Adrian Mannarino and Andreas Mies, who defeated Peter Gojowczyk and Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-4, 6-4.
Seventh seed Lukas Kubot and Horacio Zeballos, who knocked out Aljaz Bedene and Maximilian Marterer 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 in two hours and seven minutes, but ninth seeds Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau lost out to Marcelo Arevalo and Jamie Cerretani 7-5, 6-7(2), 6-3.
Elsewhere, Spaniards Pablo Carreno Busta and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez knocked out No. 15 seeds Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan, the recent Tata Open Maharashtra champions, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. Americans Ryan Harrison and Sam Querrey defeated No. 16-seeded Dutchmen Robin Haase and Matwe Middelkoop 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, while Leonard Mayer and Joao Sousa overcame Spanish No. 14 seeds Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez 6-4, 6-7(1), 6-3.
