The 2018 Next Gen ATP Finals Field: By The Numbers

There is plenty to like with the 2018 Next Gen ATP Finals field. Milan Contenders have combined for 11 Top 10 wins in their careers, and they have won 3 ATP World Tour titles and 16 ATP Challenger Tour titles. Five of the competitors here at the Fiera Milano have cracked the Top 50 in the ATP Rankings.

Stefanos Tsitsipas
The Greek is 11th on the ATP World Tour in second-serve winning percentage, claiming 54.3 per cent of those points. Tsitsipas has plenty of match experience in 2018 as well, leading the ATP World Tour with 68 tour-level matches played.

Alex de Minaur
The Aussie ranks 14th on the ATP World Tour in second-serve return points won at 52.4 per cent. Players placed above him in that category include four members of the Top 5 of the ATP Rankings: Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Juan Martin del Potro and Alexander Zverev.

Frances Tiafoe
The American is 11th on the ATP World Tour in break points saved fending off 65 per cent of his opponents’ opportunities. Tiafoe has improved in that category significantly in 2018, having saved just 52 per cent of the break points he faced in 2017.

Taylor Fritz
The 2016 ATP Star of Tomorrow is 12-2 lifetime in deciding tie-breaks at all levels. Of all players on the ATP World Tour in 2018 who have played 20 or more tour-level tie-breaks, the American is second with a rate of 73.1 per cent.

Andrey Rublev
The only player in the field to be competing at the Fiera Milano for the second time is 13th on hard courts first-serve return points won 31.1%, only #NextGenATP player in the Top 25.

Jaume Munar
The Spaniard is 1-0 in 2018 against the rest of the #NextGenATP field, beating Rublev in Winston-Salem. He has also shown his ability to step up on the big stage, reaching the semi-finals at the ATP World Tour 250-level event in Kitzbuhel.

Hubert Hurkacz
The Pole has won 16 of his past 18 matches after winning the first set at all levels. He has also enjoyed a successful year on the ATP Challenger Tour indoors, going 9-3.

Liam Caruana
The Italian has shown a proclivity to battle back when under pressure. Caruana was down two sets to love in his semi-final match in the Italian 21-and-under wild card playoff in Milan, and then he lost the first set in the final before overcoming that deficit to earn his spot in the Next Gen ATP Finals.

– Tiafoe and Fritz are in position to become the first American duo aged 21 and under to finish inside the Top 50 of the year-end ATP Rankings since 2003, when Andy Roddick (No. 1), Mardy Fish (No. 20) and Robby Ginepri (No. 30), Tiafoe’s coach, did so.
– De Minaur is the lone teenager in the field and the No. 1 Australian in the ATP Rankings. He has made the biggest jump into the Top 50 in 2018, surging from No. 208 last year to a career-high No. 31.
